Q&A: 2 on 1

Hello,

After a whole week encapsulated in the house with the flu I took some needed time off to catch some fresh air and went to London Comic Con. I’m feeling way better now and glad to be back on tracks.

Gathered 2 Q&As for you, thanks to Edrard for compiling and Ctacello for helping out with translations.

Stanislav Kargin (Veider)/ Game designer answered on the stream of T_killa aka Tenb_:

-The object 268 Variant 5 won’t be a standard vehicle (won’t belong in a tech tree), the devs are unsure of what it will be (Premium or Reward).

-“New maps are being developed, I saw them, they are good.”

-Someone said that we all (WG) play Dota, this is untrue.

– AMX M4 mle 49 will be sold on Premium Shop.

-Grile 15 statistics have gone down after 3 days, it’s at 49 % WR now.

-People say that tier 9 and 10 Czechs are over buffed, it’s not true.

-We have plans to add new branches of tanks.

– ISU-130 (vehicle for moderators and volunteers) will be buffed in the next patch.

-We have made a decision about tier 8 LTS teaming up with tier 10 SPGs (Platoon bonus/penalty), we will fix it.

-Chinese tanks are good, its people who have an aversion to them, they have good stats, especially the MTs.

-We have plans to “smooth” some places in Prokorovka, but nothing too drastic.

– I don’t know anything about Minsk and Keningsberg maps.

– Type 59 stats haven’t changed since we removed it from Premium Store.

-We are discussing to change Aid and Repair kits to be like in Wows.

-Its possible to give players the ability to choose 2-3-4 maps, we have discussed this seriously but never reached a consensus because it has its advantages and disadvantages.

-After the Arty rebalance, we will monitor closely and if we notice that TDs are overcrowding the MM we will react immediately.

-Swedish vehicles will come at the end of this year and will have unique tier 10’s.

Storm Answers:

-Player whines that the new stats display takes too much space and the colours distract him. – Storm says that players can get the old stats display on settings.

-”What’s that green line?”-”Ping-meter.”

-“Have have you done aka what’s the situation on the new spotting system?”-We didn’t make a new one, we just tried to change the old one. It’s in ASAP state. (RG: Ctacello remembers that they added this on TestServer around 2 years ago and it was full of bugs)

-The dev team is aware of the bug where it shows destroyed vehicles as living ones in the minimap but it’s not a priority.

-Players complain that the matches are highly unbalanced (2-15) and are ending pretty quickly (in less than 5min) and they ask if Storm is planning to analyse and fix it? -Storm: “I gathered feedback from the last 4 years on the average battle time, average player survivability and statistics don’t confirm that aka nothing has changed.”

– Many different players and unrelated to each others keep on complaining about the battles ending quickly. -Storm says that also many different and unrelated players wrote to him saying that “IS-6 transfer to HD was shit”. However after a careful analysis, the stats gathered don’t confirm the accusations. “What you want me to do?” He asked.

-After players kept on whining that it was MM’s fault that the battles are ending too quickly and Storm said: “Players always whine. It’s true I’m not joking. And I have to filter the whining from the real issues – It’s difficult, tedious and takes time, unfortunately.”

-Players then try to put the guilt on the maps like Erlenberg. -”When I made the analysis the maps were part of the study.”

-Player complains that with the platoon penalty is harder to complete the mission that requires killing higher tiers. -Storm: “Are you not aware how MM works?”

-There’s a bug where the enemy tanks are not showing their outline red colour and Storm said: “I confirm this bug and we will fix it.”

-The dev team doesn’t want to incorporate into the game the mod that gives statistics for the session because if players have a series of losses it can become demoralising. – “If you have a long series of wins you can feel it- it will make you happy but if you see losses in statistics it will be demoralising.”

-Player noticed that Dicker Max shows -14 of Gun Depression and asks if WG made a mistake or if it’s a hidden nerf. -Storm answers that it’s just numbers being rounded.

-Player complains that he has problems in desert maps and he has XVM mod. Storm says that 99% of the crashes are due to player’s mod usage and advice people to launch the client in Safe Mode.

Bullshit. That was like August 2012 and I am pretty sure the tank got changed in the meantime.

Type 59 may have not been changed itself, I believe this. It has however, been nerfed by proxy due to the power creep of the vehicles it now faces. In 2012 gold ammo was still available for real money only so it was hardly ever used. There were also less tanks with high penetration values.

That does not sound promising. Looks like they plan to make arty even less appealing/fun to play.
Not a big arty player but breaking it further does not sound like the solution. Also the point of a global rebalance if it immediately starts off a new cycle of nerfs.

I don’t get why people seem to think that if arty is changed there will be loads more TD’s. Arty currently doesn’t whack unspotted TD’s, it punishes heavy and mediums that are pushing near the front and are spotted. The only reason I can see this happening is if all the low skill level players that are currently in arty move to TD’s because kemp bush is easy enough for them to understand and isn’t too different from their current play style.

@Atomicemu: I doubt the TD spam will happen again like it did – TDs got the big camo nerf in the meantime, which means that the typical xvm zombie clicker will pop and drop pretty quickly after it takes a shoot. And even if not… i rather play matches with 20 pre-nerf TDs (which i did a lot after 8.6) in them than matches with 6-8 arties. The latter is just ugh, especially if you play something that is unable to avoid the various guano projectiles falling from the sky.

I actually just thought of one of the fixes they can implement for arty.
Damage caused to moving vehicles is halved (or even less, to be honest).
That way campers get hit hard, while the more active players are let off.
Such a simple thing that could be easily implemented…if WG actually gave a shit.

      • Type 319 Sharpedo says:

Yeah, “flank” when there’s probably even more small mounds. Flanking doesn’t matter when the tank has trouble on terrain that isn’t remotely flat. The tank is only good as (relatively) mobile firepower. Long range shots are difficult due to the low muzzle velocity, relatively low accuracy and bloom. Brawling isn’t an option (even though it is “supposed to be”) because the armor isn’t that much strong. It loses crew and modules too quickly and despite having the armor of a T-54, tier X guns just fly through it. Furthermore, it has an engine with less horsepower than the WZ-120’s top engine. Really WG? This severly hurts it’s ability to accelerate. At least the E-50M has the armor and gun to compensate. This thing struggles to accelerate on flat ground and becomes less of a medium.

Yeah, that is exactly the kind of arrogant attitude which made this game so bad lately. After 50k matches on the NA and now 5k on the EU I basically stopped playing WoT because the MM predetermines the outcome of a match. And as a consequence, Wargaming wants to get rid of XVM so no one can tell anymore that the MM puts all foul eggs in one basket.

I wish someone would put Storms head in a fridge and his rear end into a fire – according to his own logic statistics should confirm that his average body temperature wouldn’t have changed.

Please, ranked randoms are so necessary to get at least some of the old glory of the game back.
Average damage of 77 in 3k battles? 42% WR and obviously non-contributing? Get such people a sandbox-server to play on, where they can throw chunks of peed-on sand at each other and enjoy themselves being “special” without annoying those, who acually like to learn and improve.

    • JohnJr_1 says:

To be perfectly honest, they should et up skill based match making not a little sandbox. Because you think some of us lower skilled players want to go into battles to just get raped by the high skilled players running in platoon’s? Some of the lower skilled players could be your own grandfather, father or in my case a disabled Veteran. It is frustrating to have to deal with the match making then having jerks come out and call you crap or a P.O.S. player. Maybe some of you need to take some time and think of why may they be having lower stats. Maybe the guy is an 80 yr old veteran just coming in to try to have fun. So I see it as each and every person is different. Then the added bonus of the skill based match making would be is that you won’t have to face us lower killed players or have to deal with us. Because I for one am sick of the attitudes that look down on some of us that try to get better, but for reasons we may never get a whole lot better. So this is the time you all can push for the kill based match making to make everyone happy.

      • NoComment says:

I would be very happy with a skill based or at least skill distributing mm but I really don’t think it is on the cards. WG as pointed out by kingbrightger only go by averages and according to them if 50 people are in a room and the average age is 30 then everyone is 30 years old. The huge disparity of ability that make up the teams is stupid and just plain bad.

It breeds frustration in good and bad players and produces games where it really isn’t worth the effort of even trying for one team and an easy win for the other. Separating players of vastly different ability or at least mixing them evenly amongst the teams would go a long way to remove this.

Instead we appear to be getting a bit of tinkering in the distribution of vehicles which will solve almost nothing imo.

I meant to add : So that after 10-20k games your win rate should drift towards 50% because 50% good teams 50% bad teams is fine by them even if it comes in 5k chunks.

Luckily, it’s currently far too difficult to realise it, if you lost 8 out of the 10 last battles.
Why don’t they just admit that they’ve been working on implementing the session stats for 5 years now, yet haven’t found out yet, how to open that .exe-file to the required programming tool. The whole monkey zoo in Minsk has been on this issue for a while now.

Do they not realize that that same loss streak is just as demoralizing either way? The only solutions to this are to not track win rate at all, to have the same scoring/earnings regardless of win/loss, or to avoid having so much randomness in short term results in the first place.

  18. HeinrichVonDoucheberg says:

Storm is an arrogant cunt. Maybe he should actually try playing the game he’s working on. And that is the biggest problem in WoT, developers do not play the game they work on, and they don’t listen to players. For the past 7-8 months or maybe more, majority of the games are landslide ending with 15:0 – 15:5 scores in about 4min (and those games are not fun, regardless of which team you’re on), only about 5% of games are close games. And it didn’t used to be like this, I remember having so much more close games a year ago, and on average they lasted 7-8min. I don’t know if matchmaking is shittier than it used to be since I don’t use XVM, or if it’s because of the removal of maps like Pearl River and Northwest on which games lasted a bit longer, but I know one thing: shorter games mean less damage for an average player resulting in less income per game and more games per hour which means more repair costs payed. And demand for premium time and premium tanks will increase.

Oh, and the guy who they said has returned to WG and is one of the original map makers apparently made Ensk and MInes, maps that are more suitable for 5v5 or 7v7 than for 15v15. So don’t expect any good maps to come.

What a bullshit, try to win with paper tanks vs HTs on Himmelsdorf. Or HTs vs MTs on prohorovka. Unballanced team setup does mean everything when it comes to battle time and result.

    • Stephan says:

Sometimes I just give up just by looking at the setup. Enemy: Kv’5, IS3, T32 O-Ho. My team: FCM50T, Tiger 2, Caernarvon, TVP. Guess which team wins? Open maps, maybe but in corridor no chance.

Some tanks like a CDC or T54Prot require a decent player to make them work whereas noob players driving IS3’s or Kv’s get away with it because they are noob proof and don’t know what they are doing. I am not even started about winchances of 30% which makes your game useless and miserable.

Sure it can be demoralising when you look at your daily sessions when you have constant losses. Obviously they don’t realise that mm can give you horrible team setups and winchances all day long and it’s not even funny, now that’s demoralising! How many times in games where I played really well, dealing tons of damage only to lose because the enemy is so much better or your team is full of red players. Okay it may happen for 1 or 2 games but when it happens 5 times it becomes absurd. The funniest thing is, when losing a match you can still have a good game and do 4k damage in a tier 8. In the same tier 8 when winning you deal about 800 damage in a match…

  23. “Grille15 WR went down after 3 days”

Because after 3 days people had enough of that thing firing gold at 0.25 accuracy and penetrating anything at any angle so they started driving arty and 183mm guns to rebalance it instead of waiting dor WG to do it.

The tank is fine, but as soon as it loads gold its not anymore. It is balanced by below-average pen so the monster DPM and accuracy dont make it OP, well gold means it can hit the front plate of an angled Type4 (front plate, not “shoulders”) and pen it for 750dmg every 13s. How balanced is that. But hey gold ammo is fine it just ruins the game about as much as arty, exept you really have no way to counter it this time.

      • Yeah well explain why the large majority tier X I engage spams nothing but gold.

The difference between a T-62A is penetrating or not the angled front of a Type5 HT. Because you know a fast medium tank with huge dpm and low profile is supposed to do that instead of flanking the slow HT as large as a building.

Gold ruined skill, heavy tanks with armor and the game in general because it doesnt matter how good you angle yourself if someone throws gold at you it’ll pen. At least arty takes 40s to reload, has a chance to miss and may do only 400dmg unlike the russian medium that does 300dmg every 5s with laser accuracy.

      • pixywing says:

Gold of tier 10 is terrible as a heavily angled Maus gets penned in the front by tier 9s and some tier 8s spamming gold into it. Whats the point of armor when gold rounds exist. Sure they should be able to pen its sides and maybe a non-angled LFP, but angled UFP you have to be kidding me.

  30. Loulakas says:

This game is actually a PvP 1st person shooter between players with different age, hardware, internet connection, experience, IQ, skill. Kids, old people, cheap laptops, hi-end gaming rigs, WiFi, living next to WG servers or far from them, WoT maniacs, casual players etc. etc. THIS IS THE BIG AND WHOLE PICTURE.
All these far different people are the potential clients of WG and somehow they must all be kept happy. When the designers of this game started its development they choose to have 15 vs 15 battles. Why? So the average contribution of a player in his team would be 100 / 15 = 6.66%. In this way if a player is inexperienced or lags or drops its team still has a chance to win the battle. The initial idea was that this 15 vs 15 match up would hide, level, compensate all these differences between players but still leaving a sense to the player that his performance in some extent can control the outcome of the battle. The initial battle match up was +3/-3 in tier so even the most incompetent player could score some kills as a top tier. Skills on crew members were introduced later in the game and they were designed to rise logarithmic so experienced players wouldn’t have a great advantage over casual ones. Still to have a commander with 6th sense and BIA you need 736,237 exp and that’s a lot. Switching from tank to tank without training a decent crew or installing equipment is the typical kids-noobs-casual players play style. The truth is that the “garage” and not the “battle” part of this game is the one that brings money to WG. Premium vehicles for credits and crew training, premium account to grind all these tech trees and be able to play tier Xs, over powered tier Xs when they are first introduced, exp conversion for gold, premium ammo and consumables, etc. etc. It is in WGs strong interest to keep the width of the bell shaped WR% distribution curve narrow and make players think that they are evolving or getting better in this game as they are getting more and more new tanks. That’s why when team battles (7 vs 7) were first introduced the match maker tried to match teams with similar Personal Rating sums. From WGs point of view all differences between players must be hidden and subdued. As we all know by now in the US 8425330 B1 patent it is stated: “… According to another aspect, the matchmaking server may store a win/loss percentage for each user (or vehicle) at a given battle level. As the player’s win/loss ratio decreases, the player becomes more likely to be placed in battles having battle levels at the lower end of the allowable range, whereas as the player’s win/loss ration increases, the player becomes more likely to be placed in battles having battle levels at the upper end of the allowable range. Thus, when a player has been repeatedly put into too many difficult battles, the balancing is done in favor of easier battle sessions, thereby encouraging the player by providing an easier game environment. Similarly, when the player has been repeatedly put into too many easy battles, the balancing is done in favor of harder battle sessions, thereby keeping the player challenged instead of letting the player become bored with easy games. …”
All these facts raise some interesting questions:
    1. Many players have almost as many hours in this game as Michael Phelps has in the swimming pool, have every one of their commanders with 6th sense and BIA, everyone of their drivers with smooth ride and BIA, every one of their gunners with snap shot and BIA, save their credits and stockpile consumables in thousands and equipment during specials that are cheap, shoot only premium ammo, etc. etc. How on hell can WG keep them and the kids-noobs-casual players anxious to try everyone of its 440+ tanks on a PvP game both happy without [edited]ing them (the old-timers) behind their back ?
    2. Why it’s so [edited]ing easy to have a 50 battle period with a total of 80 kills (that is 1.6 kills/battle), with a 2200 Win8 and a 42% WR% ? Something like this should never happen. How can so many human choices during battles of 1450 other players and a RNG function (no matter how bad it is) have such an extreme and twisted result? Simply the damn sample it’s too large.
    3. The mathematical probability for a player to be the top damage dealer of his team in two defeats in a row (and without taking into account that doing damage normally lowers the probability of a defeat) is 1/15 * 1/2 * 1/15 * 1/2 = 1/900. Why doesn’t this apply to experienced players (especially on weekends)? Every experienced player hates weekends and blames noobs-kids-casual players for that but there are 15 positions for them to fill in the enemy team and 14 in his and 15 is greater than 14. According to math every experienced player ought to have an increase in WR% during weekends, but this is [edited]ing far from truth. You need some sort of mechanism that makes this [edited] we all know happen.
    4. In the game’s Hall of Fame WG choose not to give the W/B rating of players for a period less than 4 weeks. Why?
    5. Why every time an experienced player with decent stats, with almost always more than 20,000 battles and less than 50 posts, posts on the forum that this game and its MM is rigged as hell, always the same not more than 15 players with less than 15,000 battles and more than 1,500 posts, start posting like maniacs on that thread about tin foil hats, the thickness of earths crust and the nutritional properties of spinach? WG employees on “maskirovka” forum patrol duty?
    6. This game is pay-to-high caliber-loose in the long run. Why should anyone spend time and money on a game that getting better will only give him more high caliber defeats?
    7. When will WG start showing some respect to old dedicated experienced players? They think it’s OK loosing an old dedicated player for every 5 new casual ones, but they forget that the old one is a good dedicated paying customer. The 5 new ones are just potential customers.
The way I see it there is only one solution for WG to revive this [edited] game. Remove all the MM rigs they have been using (internal difficulty levels, predefined outcome battle templates, global RNG modifiers for teams, taking Personal Rating of players into account during team formation etc, etc, what so ever …) and (the whole idea belongs to many other tormented old-timers) divide the player base in 5 leagues based on Personal Rating where a player would only play with or against players of the same league. Of course as the level of the league increases so the credit and Exp income should increase with possibly a small income in gold for the top league. The number of players assigned to each league must be kept somehow equal to minimize queue waiting and if a player performs too well in his league for some time will be moved to the upper league and vice versa. In this way every player will finally have that precious for WG WR% of 49% in an ethical way without being furious about it. Those cursed loosing streaks induced by the MM rigs will became shorter and fewer, unicum platoons for inflation of WR% will become meaningless, XVM bulling and swearing will be reduced and being roflstomped in a difficult battle (which just sucks for now) will worth it and pay far better.

    • it’s probably the Strv 103 for the TD line, maybe a prototype somehow related to the CV90 for the first tier 10 light tank in the game, the Kranvagn as tier 10 heavy and possibly their modification of the Centurion as tier 10?

Sliphantom made a great point in a recent video of his about WG staff and this “global rebalance”. While I agree that its a good thing to hold Q&A’s with the players, WG is atrocious when it comes to acting upon their words. Note how they always say “we are looking into it” or “we are discussing it” to make it seem like they are taking action to appease the player base when in reality they rarely do. And then you get some staff that literally just say “screw you” to their loyal *customers* trying to provide constructive feedback on thr game instead of working on new projects. We don’t want more reward tanks entering supertest that will never come to live server being worked on, we need developers to make sure their patches actually work before they go live (ex: physics and the errors with it, and don’t say they didn’t have enough time because in 2013 or so they showcased a seemingly more complex version of tank and environment physics).

TL;DR: WG should focus on the players, not the profits first, since the players are what generates profit. Also, work on the PR.

  34. Someone says:

-Grile 15 statistics have gone down after 3 days, it’s at 49 % WR now.

If that WR was like IS-7s, which is drove by all kinds of rejects, it would be nice. But no, 49% is for decent players, so those rejects I mentioned before will be at 45%, even less.

Who the hell is responsible for the pathetic tank balance in this game ? Can’t they look beyond that pointless WR number when balancing a vehicle ???
