SerB Q&A

Good day everyone,

Got a few excerpts from a recent interview with none other than SerB.

Thanks to JerryatRick for his assistance.

Q: Often in their responses to the livejournal mention the so-called. “Backyard Bovington” as inspiration. It’s understandable that it is a link to the museum, but what is the exact meaning of this saying?
A:Serb: In a narrower sense in terms of the development of tanks by the British engineers, and in the broader terms of any strange tanks. Each nation has such, including Germany.

Q: Basically, every year there is a new nation in WoT. How many more years will take this rule, since the candidates become fewer and fewer?
A: S: Soon there will be Swedish tanks. Italians have the potential for low and medium tierach, but lack the top machines. There is also a suggestion Polish trees, but it is not an easy task due to the fact that Poland as a result of the war since 1939 did not create anything too could own. There are a lot of interesting projects, but we do not want to create the strength of another tree with Soviet clones. We try to find something interesting in the archives. In addition, they say even about Israel, but in this case it is an even bigger problem – their only original construction is the Merkava, and this is too modern for WoT (T_J: Apart from the fact that their country was established three years after the war). Therefore, we would have to invent a very early prototype. All other vehicles are ordinary modifications of foreign vehicles, or their clones. Number of nations in the game can not be unlimited, but there are a lot of interesting vehicles that have not yet appeared in WoT. For example, another Soviet projects, or those sent from China. Besides, I would love to see the game in your favorite Argentine tank.

Q: What about the tank is so special?

A: It has a very cool name – “Nahuel” (in Russian reads like what “on hui / dick”, which means more or less “back off.” We can confidently accept). Players certainly will like it.

Q: What would you like to improve in the WoT?
A: Personally I would redesign the mechanics of a few lines, but I do not want to move the overall concept and plan.

Q: After the release of WoWs you wanted the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union on an equal footing as a single nation in the game. Did it work out?

A: S: Still not quite, because they have not yet released Tsarist-Soviet line of battleships, but I can say that the Russian and Soviet cruisers / destroyers have equal status. This means that they are popular due to the specification, and not nation.

Q: Today, many companies are trying to start projects based on tanks, but they all come from countries of the former Soviet Union. Why don’t, for example, EA or Blizzard go in this direction, since tanks are so popular?

A: Well, one of those games is designed by an American company, Obsidian, but published by the Russian Mail.ru. The truth is that apart from us onpy the Germans could do something else. For Americans WW2 is mostly associated with the Pacific, and naval combat. Of course they also fought land battles (along with the English and Italians) but nobody used tanks on such a large scale that we and the Germans did. However, there is one problem for the Germans- they don’t want all of this on their minds. I once visited one of the German factories involved in tank production during WW2 and requested to look at their archives, that request was denied. While leaving we heard “We want peace in the world, please go away”. Of course this doesn’t negate the possibility of a good game about tanks from the US or Japan. We remember the Japanese simulator “Panzer Front”. They even had that bogus German tank E-79, with the crew of gnomes because people couldn’t fit in there. It looked quite interesting! We even wanted to buy the license for the tanks.

Q: Why do you think World of Warplanes and World of Warships have not had as much success as Tanks?

A: WoWp simply flopped. The case for WoWs is a bit complicated. It failed to take attention away from tanks in Russia, but is very good in Asia. We’re even catching up with WoT there. For Russia, tanks will always be more popular. Anyway, WoWs floats and is profitable. We hope for its further improvement. Some days I even go to St. Petersberg to personally help with that game.

    Wait a second…
This guy is a little bit inconsistent.
“There is also a suggestion Polish trees”
Ok. That is fine, they had some uniqe tanks.
(btw. as far as I know there would be only 3 – 2 clone like tanks in this tech tree, or even none if WG would use their “creativity” ).

“we do not want to create the strength of another tree with Soviet clones”
    And then he says:
“For example, another Soviet projects, or those sent from China”

Seriously ? Another soviet tanks that are somehow not clones / copies of tanks that are already in the game ? And some “original” chinese tanks that are not clones LoL.
I find that hard to belive…

btw. Was this guy drunk or somthing during this Q&A ?!

The Chinese tree was introduced to break Wargaming into the Chinese market (a literal cashcow market). So they kind of have to wear that one, cause that tree is basically 90% copy’s of soviet tanks.

In more recent times they set up guidelines for trees that are potentially going to get added to the game.

1.) Logical tree were all the tanks share a common play-style and are not broken (No derp cannons)
2.) The Tree needs to be marketable (Pre-exitsting playerbase+Other players will want them)
      3.) Not all copy/paste tanks
4.) Must have a viable/unique tier 10 (See Poland and Italy)
5.) Fills a Niche that the game does not yet have (Sweden is the test-bed for this, with Hydraulic Suspensions being featured)

“The case for WoWs is a bit complicated. It failed to take attention away from tanks in Russia, but is very good in Asia”

    Couple of reasons for this:
    – It’s less toxic then WoT Asia
    – We get patches same time as other servers unlike with WoT Asia
    – They tell us about maintance periods unlike with WoT Asia
    – Island nations that prioritised navy over tanks

Basically the people that manage WoT Asia are just incompetant and the community is too toxic since you have various nations that bare hate to each other

Personally I think that the Polish tree will be the last nation tree before they will introduce a mix of tanks from various countries. We may even get Swiss, Italian, or Hungarian before them. Why? It is not because Russians hate Poles ;-), it is because the playerbase in Poland is so large. They are accepting NOW the lack of their nation tanks, so introduction of them would not increase the game popularity there. They will introduce Polish tanks when the game popularity will start dropping, or there will be no other nation for a tree… I am not buying SerB explanation. The game is full of fantasy tanks, and in case of Poland you not only have the “fantasy” tanks that have never left the drawning board, but also modifications of soviet tanks (clones if you will) AND tanks take over from the nemy – source of extra money for WG, and premium tanks. Tanks like e.g. Panether take over from the Germans during the Warsaw Uprising etc.
But sure, why to follow logic, let us flood the game with more Chinese copypaste tanks.

    • Ehhh… at least they were on the blueprints or contemporary concept art.

I mean, Poland did have a nice collection of tanks for the lower tiers, such as the 7TP and the TKS tankette, but as for the higher tiers, there aren’t too many, since by then, Poland were basically using Soviet designs, and British and American designs if you count the Polish Army in Exile.

And the Warsaw Uprising Panther would probably be a premium, and would basically be another Panther/M10.

  13. No need for any complicated universal trees or trees with tank clones, just release new tanks as mission reward tanks just like the Stug IV, T28 HTC, T55A, and Object 260 instead of just copying armored warfare. I’ve been stuck on the T55A missions for a year now, sure would appreciate having something else to shoot for instead of grinding artillery for those last few points.

    Eh, probably for the best.

    “WoWp simply flopped.”
So nice that someone will finally outright admit it.

“While leaving we heard “We want peace in the world, please go away”.”
How idiotic. Making a wargame is not the same as making war. More likely, giving people an outlet to blow shit up in a virtual environment reduces real-world violence. Not to mention it creates (admittedly somewhat specialized) jobs, and generates capital that’ll eventually trickle down and boost the economy by a small amount, potentially improving people’s quality-of-life, potentially making them more comfortable and less likely to want to go to war.

Pacifism is ridiculously narrow- and short-sighted sometimes.

I must say that WoWS is interesting case. It is still fairly new and it will take several years to really get recognized. (WG is helping by buying online ads for it)
Also its mechanics are quite different from WoT including torpedoes and aircraft carriers. (Not to mention maneuvering with ships is different from tanks) Much morem thinking and planning required in WoWS then in WoT I think.

Nowadays I spend a lot of time in WoWS.

About the part when those krauts said “We want peace in the world, please go away”. I once playing Company of Heroes I got an apologize from a German which was like ‘Sorry fo the war’ after we talked who comes from where. How dumbass someone must be to blame him/herself for something the nation the person comes from did something horrible when he wasn’t even born? I’m sure SerB would have brought the apocalypse to the whole world if he had the opportunity to look at some weird junk some German engineer came up with when he was half drunk.
