Fair Play Policy

73

Good day everyone,

The World of Tanks EU site has just posted this bit of news clarifying their position on mods, illegal or otherwise.

  • We’ll continue to expand our work on anti-cheating technology solutions. We are being realistic about the problem: we can’t promise that the game will be 100% cheat free one day. Cheaters are clever and tackling them will go on forever. What we can promise you is that we will keep up the fight to keep competition as clean as possible, reduce the incidences of cheating, and take action against those who don’t play fair.
  • We’ve outlined a clear list of illegal mods that we will share with you here and now. Moving forward, we’ll be keeping an eye on new mods and update the list accordingly.
  • We’re also establishing a clear penalty system. It is uniform across all regions and applies to everyone found to be using prohibited software.

Players caught using illegal mods for the first time will recieve a notification and a 7 day ban. A second offense will result in a permanent ban.

WarGaming will be looking at mode in rouggly three categories:

  1. Mods that do not provide a gameplay advantage, but merely allow information customization for the viewer. They are “pure” mods in the traditional sense, and we like them.
  2. Mods that do provide a gameplay advantage, but one that we believe contributes to the game in a positive way. In the short term, we’ll treat these as good mods, and we will look to implement them into the vanilla client in the future.
  3. Mods that do provide a gameplay advantage, one that we think is bad overall for the game. These are classified as a cheat and are illegal going forward.

And what type of mod would fall into the third category:

  • Mods that reveal the position of enemies in a way not included in the vanilla client, by marking objects destroyed on the map and minimap in real-time, by altering the display of shell flight tracers or calculating the position of enemy SPGs with tracers and marking them, as well as those that keep spotted vehicles displayed, even when you aren’t aiming at them
  • Software that makes it easier to block an enemy’s shell by indicating their exact aiming point, for example, with a laser beam
  • Modifications that alert you when spotted vehicles are reloading or show enemy vehicles’ reloading timers
  • Auto-aim or so-called “aimbots” that provide more functionality than the “aim lock” in the vanilla client, specifically including those that aim at the enemy’s weak spots and/or lead the aim automatically so that a cheater can focus on maneuvering their tank
  • Software that enables the automatic use of non-Premium consumables
  • Mods that aid in finding enemies by letting you adjust the transparency of objects on the map
  • Software that leaves “ghosts” of enemy vehicles on the battlefield, placed where they were last detected
  • Mods that actually alter the physical properties, performance characteristics, or effects of any vehicle or object in the game, or subvert the game rules.

They go on to note that in-match will not be added to the Forbidden Mods list at the moment. This will change eventually as WarGaming is developing their own version that will be added to the game at some point in the future, after which such mods will be forbidden.

Armor viewers that only function in the garage are fine however.

Rita, you missed to very important part of description.

“We’re asking you to trust in their decisions. They are under no obligation to provide the player evidence or explain which mod type the player was found to be using, and will not do so even if requested.”

You can’ t take back your account when you banned by someone for some reason, you never know it … This part is a little ‘dirty’.

    • Technically it doesn’t do that. It only takes into account . Unspotted light tanks can still spot you even if the mod says you’re in the clear. Since the player himself has access to and can make a educated guess on whether he is detected or not it becomes a grey area.

    Wait. Again.
“Mods that give an advantage , but one that we believe contributes to the game in a positive way.”

    WTF
How on earth a mod that gives somebody advantage acts positively twards gamplay ?!

Evrything. Evrithing that gives you just a litle, tiny bit of advantage is a cheat. In evry game. Not only in video games. in EVERY game that exists.

    And this:
“we can’t promise that the game will be 100% cheat free one day.”

So how much % can WG promise ? ? ?

Tip: If you want to get rid of cheats… Get rid of their source perhaps ?
Yep res_mods folder. Since 99% of mods are cheats, why WG would not simply remove the ability to mod the game and add some file checksum check (anti cheat) ?
Almost every respectable onlin PvP gam has somthing like that…
WG. You are doing it WRONG ! 🙁

    in short this masage says:
We are WG. We categorized mods on legal, slightly legal and illegal. We dont know what to do. We have a problem. We fuc**d up again sorry.
    🙁

But still. It could be worse…

And when smoke cirlces was a mod in WoWs they should have been considered a cheat, since being able to see the smoke circles gives you a pretty decent advantage in knowing if you’re inside or outside of the smoke.

Precisely. Well maybe not 99% 98% ? Or 95% at best. Just look at every page with mods for WoT. It is not difficult. All you need is google.

Well let’s ask ourselves: What mods don’t give you advantage ? Pretty much every garage mod and maybe better looking HD skins for tanks. Almost every other mod that affects battle or battle loading screen in any way gives advantage. It may be small. It may be tiny, but nonetheless – it is an advantage.

When it gives you advantage that you would not have in default game client – it is a cheat.
It is a simple as that.

btw. I am pretty sure that vast majority mods for WoT are cheats. And yes – there are no official Wg statistics of % that are cheats. Partially because there are too many mods for Wg to track them all. That is why I think creating a list of illegal mods would not work. The only think that would decrease number of cheats in WoT is an Anti-cheat system.

        (sorry for double post) 😀

The don’t. Much like garage mods don’t give you advantage.

Read exactly what I have wrote:
“What mods don’t give you advantage ? Pretty much every garage mod and maybe better looking HD skins for tanks.”

And this is a small percentage of all WoT mods (not counting variations of the same mod).
Unfortunately vast majority of mods affect battle in some way, thus give you advantage and are cheats.

Ah sorry, I must have misread your post. I thought you said ‘what mods DO give you an advantage’.

And I do agree a lot of mods affect gameplay, but that doesn’t directly mean they are cheats. Affecting gameplay and accessing information you normally wouldn’t have are not the same. For example, XVM does affect gameplay, but I don’t think it can be considered a cheat mod…

A lot of mods I see are graphical enhancement mods, XVM-type mods, HUD-mods or some variation of those. The only real cheat mods are aimbots, reload timer mods and damage mod. And most of those are just some variation of the same thing. All in all, I think it’s probably more of a half and half mixture. Considering most average players probably don’t even know how to install mods, let alone find a good cheat mod.

So if XVM is illegal on ESL then why it would be leagal on regular wot random battles – the core gamplay ? ? ?

Besides XVM has a very large impact on gamplay. How many times did you saw a allied tank saying that “we have 2% chance to win” – and 3 of your team’s tanks are afk or drownig themselfs ? Too much in my case…

So instead of scaring cheaters by handing out permabans when they get caught they now get a freebie this is T-22 RIGGATE all over again isn’t it.

This is going to encourage people to cheat tournaments as the worst case scenario is a 7 day ban whereas before you feared getting your accounter permabanned. The fact that EU WoT wants to keep cheaters in the game is disheartening to see to say the least.

    • Grim says:

The first warning temp ban is for people who don’t know they’re using an illegal mod. Example, XVM, with this announcement, is illegal now because XVM a few days ago added a reload timer for the last tank that hits you. A lot of people use XVM, and that’s the only part of the mod that is illegal.

(To be honest, it was a questionable decision to add a reload timer to xvm in the first place, as reload timers were already a bit dubious.)

It’s to protect people who are unaware or are ignorant. Gives them a chance to delete the bad mod, and continue having fun with the game. Rigging on the other hand is a different subject all together. Riggers loose pretty much everything they gained during the time they were rigging, and get permabanned if they’re caught a second time.

Giving someone a first time warning encourages people to cheat. That’s the USA way of thinking.
“It’s not specifically stated that my pretty mod that makes my shells do maximum damage every time i miss… that must mean its a legal mod!”
Comon sense is nowhere to be found among cheaters.
It destroys the playing experienxe for the majority of players who don’t cheat.
Cheaters will always be around (sadly), and it takes a BIG effort to try to make a game “cheat free”.
Especially if you want to keep the game flexible enough to allow legal mods.
The only way to thwart cheating is to lock the gameclient into a safe “memory box” with realtime mem/disk checksums, so that the original “vanilla” client is unmodified. (I think Ultima Online did something like that…)
But that ruels out XVM and any other mod out there.
(Unless WG hires modders that write ingame mods that are incorporated into the client.)

I wish Wargaming would take cheating seriously like Blizzard does and not only ban the account on the first offense, but the computer and ip address as well. This prevents them from ever using that computer again as well which is a lot less than deleting an account with 2k games on it, but you are telling them good job for doing even less than this with a 1 week ban. Hearing people get permabanned from Overwatch to buy another copy after factory wiping their computer to have the second copy perma blocked is fantastic, too bad you will hear on EU lol I got a week ban for using warpack in tourneys for the last 4 years LOL.

The good news is that at least WE acknowledge that cheats problem exists in WoT and it is not like 10 – 20 % of players. It is more like 60 – 70 % of players.

The bad news is that WG simply don’t know what to do with it. I am just curious, why they just simply don’t disable the ability to mod the game and add some anti-cheat to prevent modified game from working.

You will no longer be able to use some garage mods and HD skins mods (probobly only mods that don’t give adavtage).

Right now there are so many unfair mods out there so eaven if you play on “clean” unmoded game, when you will be lucky and do something almost impossible (one shot another tank in ammo rack or something like that) you are automaticly reported for cheating.

60 -70% of players don’t even know mods exist and if they do they wouldn’t be able to install them even if it came with written instructions.

      So stop talking rubbish.

On EU : About a third of all players use mods. About half of them use mod packs from QB or other you tubers etc. About a quarter of them use mods that they themselves install (like me). And the other quartery use cheats.

Cheats are much less common than most people think and most of it is a result of confirmation bias rather than any actual proof.

I don’t know if you realize this but… If a mod gives you any sort of advantage over default clean game client – it is a cheat.
Just look at every cheat definition out there. It is not a freaking rocket science.

And If only mods that are not cheats are garage mods and maybe HD skin for tanks, therefore pretty much the rest of mods are cheat.

Conclusion: almost every mod is a Cheat. So if you say that “About a third of all players use mods” so you can say that about 30 % of players use cheats.
In PvP game the difference between mod and a cheat is very blurry.

Even if those are only assumptions this is preet impresive…

That is true however the mods I and most of the people I know use are mods for ease of life.
One of my biggest reasons for using XVM is for the garage and crew changes. It makes things a lot easier. Sure it gives you extra information in game too. But it’s nearly all information a good player can work out anyway. Before I used to use mods I used to watch the minimap constantly and I would know where the last spotted position of pretty much every tank was in my head anyway.
It does take away in the sense that bad players who otherwise wouldn’t have a clue are also fed this information.
I don’t think mods should be banned per se unless WG implements the main ones into the game. I run almost mod less now anyway since the changes in the last few patches.

you people don’t know anything about modding..
you are telling me “HD skins” are not a cheat.. oh really? here it is how it works: if you can modify the tank textures, (skins) that means YOU CAN MODIFY it to show weak spots.. now don’t tell me its different thing or WG can trace that cheat.. they simply cannot..

lets say they did a anti cheat system somehow and they can view the skins in game.. still they can’t decide its a cheat or something else, it could be simple dot, or maybe camo pattern that marks weak spots.. only creator of skin can understand that and WG don’t have any rights to tell its illegal..

modding is generally is toxic in this game and every little “player made content” is giving advantage to players.. I hope you can understand

I do understand. That is why I think that WG should do the same with mods as they did with cross – team chat – disable it.

      Ok hear me out first.
If WG would disable the abilit to mod the game then everybody would play the same game.
Sure you can say that it is not possible to eleimitae cheats in 100% But If you disable the ability to mod the game, and add an anti-cheat (so you would only be able to run default clean game), I guess that it might be best solution ?

There are more advantages than disadvantages off this ^

“We’ve outlined a clear list of illegal mods that we will share with you here and now”.

No, Wargaming has not given us a clear list of ‘illegal mods’. Is Jimbo’s gunsight an illegal mod? Is Auto-Aim + Indication an illegal mod? It operates like the vanilla lock on, but it just operates better. It does not target lead, nor will it focus on weak spots. Is it ‘Illegal’? What about XVM range circles on the the mini-map? They give me an advantage over someone who does not have that. You think Wargaming has never heard of XVM? Of course they have, so where is the list??
