WoT Blitz: Premium Shell Nerfs

25

A bit late, but still relevant considering the ongoing conversation regarding overpowered Premium tanks and premium ammo.

World of Tanks Blitz has took measures to balance premium ammunition, both with overall changes and fine tuning a few select tanks. Mixed in with a few buffs to certain standard ammunition buffs, the goal is to make a more level playing field. Here’s what will be happening:

The two main parameters of Premium shells will be adjusted:

  • Damage will decrease by an average of 15%. The change will not affect U.K. HESH-shells, so FV215b (183) fans can relax.
  • The price will decrease by an average of 20%, reaching 40% for some vehicles.

For Premium vehicles that use Premium shells more often than other vehicles, the penetration values of standard shells were increased:

  • Churchill III: to 130 mm, was 110 mm
  • Matilda IV: to 97 mm, was 86 mm
  • Matilda BP: to 130 mm, was 110 mm
  • M4A2E4 Sherman: to 106 mm, was 92 mm
  • T14: to 106 mm, was 92 mm
  • T26E4 SuperPershing: to 205 mm, was 170 mm

These Premium vehicles will now be able to earn more credits. The cost of Premium shells will decrease, while standard shells will score more penetrating hits and cause more damage; altogether, it will increase the net profit in credits.

For many researchable vehicles that had premium shells as the key type of ammunition, the penetration value of armour-piercing shells was increased:

  • M3 Lee, M8A1, M4 Sherman, M7, T21, M4A3E2 Sherman Jumbo, and M4A3E8 Sherman
Gun 75 mm Gun M3 and 75 mm AT Gun M3: 106 mm, was 92 mm
  • E-100
    Gun 15 cm. Kw.K. L/38: 258 mm, was 235 mm
  • Medium II and Medium III
    Gun QF 6-pdr 8 cwt Mk. I: 65 mm, was 57 mm
  • Churchill I, Crusader and Cromwell
Gun QF 6-pdr Gun Mk. V: 130 mm, was 110 mm
  • Ha-Go, Chi-Ni and Chi-Ha
Gun 5.7 cm Gun Type 97: 38 mm, was 30 mm
  • Renault FT and D1
Gun 37 mm APX SA18: 37 mm, was 29 mm
  • D2 and B1
    Gun 47 mm SA35: 62 mm, was 45 mm

Shells for the SU-100Y and Tankenstein will not undergo any changes.

This issue is being addressed (in the Blitz developers words) in order to promote vehicle rolls, for example, a lighter armored vehicle with great gun stats will have an advantage over a heavily armored vehicle also using premium ammo for a large caliber gun, as the heavy really gains nothing and its armor advantage is more or less done away with.

With the new nerfs, that lighter tank now has to make the decision to switch to premium ammo and take a bit longer to do a certain amount of damage, or aim for weak spots with standard rounds but potentially killing the target faster.

As well as the nerfs, the reduction in premium shell prices will hopefully create a bit more equality among players, as well as allow competitive players to carry a decent loadout without braking the bank.

Perhaps kicking the hornets nest here, but what do you guys and gals think about these changes? Would you be interested in seeing other versions of World of Tanks adopt something similar?

I like how the tanks that got a pen buff in WoT PC aka T26E4, E 100 have still less pen than the changes they want to make on WoT Blitz 😀

Less damage for more penetration resulting in cheaper premium rounds is absolutely balanced in my opinion.

Im surprised that no one cmt on this XD
Really tho, a similar system will be more than welcome in PC WoT
Then again, with the amount of vehicle in the game, balancing them all will be a nightmare

So as of right now we have at least 12 uniscums not happy with the idea of aiming to do more damages instead of just autoaiming at the front of SHTs 🙂

I don’t see 15% being a significant difference. You’d have to be firing more than 6 shots at the same target for that to matter.

On any 1 on 1 15% can mean one tank dies before firing a return killing shot because of choosing firing one gold shell over aiming one AP shot,
Other end of scale the team firing gold will lose tanks faster than a team firing standard rounds.
For a third bonus, damage farming XVM padders will pad harder when landing standard shots though they might need to get closer to targets to penetrate so will inadvertently be more use to team than farming damage from back bush in a lost game 🙂

All my yes. Though it’s often frowned apon to compare in such a way, Warthunder IS a good example for this. AP with he filler is always the best choice ammo because it does more damage. But apcr does pen more whole doing less overall damage because it is solid shot. And HEAT ammo is good because it loses no pen over distance and is good for light vehicles too, having no over pen, something I think WoT needs as well.

15% less damage is too small of a decrease, it’s less than standard RNG fuckery. 25% would be IMHO ideal, it would require actual thinking before pushing the magical 2 button. But it’s still better than no change at all.
I like the changes to gold-reliant tanks too
Nerf the gold, stop shitting out OP premiums and buff standard tier 7 and 8 tanks so they have a fighting chance against those totally balanced Defenders, Chryslers, Patriots, etc. and WoT might be playable again.

Exactly what is needed in the PC version.

Nerf the premium shells, if not in penetration then at least in the damage they cause.

    Well dome WG Blitz team.

Btw, 205 pen on the SP and 258 AP pen on E-100 is a wet dream.

In my opinion the Damage Potential should be lowered by exactly the same amount the penetrations gets increased by.

    example:
    Regular Ammo: 300 dmg – 200 pen
Premium Ammo: 150 dmg – 300 pen. (50% pen increase will lead to 50% dmg decrease)

You can be a lazy ass and pen upper frontplates with enough pen but therefore you should not be rewarded by doing more damage than somebody that tries to focus weakspots and/or does flanking manouvres putting his tank at higher risk.

But thats just my opinion. I’m sure plenty of people like to hit the “key” to insta-pen everything no matter how heavily armored it is.

Why would you try to play smart when u can just buy massive amounts of OP premiumtanks and load gold all the time ? ;D

I don’t think there is any way to balance premium shells. Taking less damage is still taking damage. You can’t talk about a 15% damage decrease because it’s still going to be infinitely more than a non-penetration (zero damage). All it means is your death will take slightly longer while you’re in a position where you should be safe.

The entire system needs to be radically changed. I believe ammo types should be in the game as side grades only where they have advantages in certain situations. I think its one thing armored warfare had right.

This. I’ve been suggesting the 15% nerf in damage for a while. The reduction in cost is brilliant. Also brilliant is the pen increase for low pen tanks.

Wot PC needs to pick this up, but all the wn8 and damage farmers will bitch so much this will never happen.

Right now there is no real tradeoff for those with credits to hit the 2 key. In this case if you want to get full damage folks will need aim or flank.

Not radical enough. Not by a long way.

There should be no gold ammo. It is unacceptable and pay to win that there is a expensive ammo that is strictly – overall – better than the normal ammo.

Damage reduction is however a good start. But I am certain the stat bobs will whine nonetheless.

i agree with damage nerfs, but increasing the pen is stupid. if you’ve ever played with asians, you’d find out just how hardcore we can get, especially the koreans. i’ve had tons of battles where my hitlog is registering golden showers on my tanks…the 15% is a negligible obstacle, a mere worn out speedbump.

for asia, i would propose a 30% dmg nerf w/o bonus pen, or 40-50% dmg nerf + bonus pen. it’s time these insolent fools learn how to man up and face my true might

You misread the article. The pen increase was for standard AP on vehicles that normally have to use lots of premium ammo because standard ammo pen was substandard.

You know why 15% was picked? It is not some random number. On average those that fire gold in Blitz did 15% more damage than they would firing standard. This is of course according to them.

  18. Aikl says:

Good idea, but it would require actual weakspots on tanks to be ideal.

I like the challenge of playing with standard pen, hitting weakspots or flanking enemies. When the latter is limited by the maps, and former limited by minimal/no weakspots, it’s obvious that it’s load the gold or lose. When the pen on many premium rounds is in the “autopen” range, it’s just boring.
