WoT Ranked Battles Q&A

26

Brief Q&A from Amway921 and Olga (Product Manager for Ranked Battles), and mostly about just that, Ranked Battles:

At the start of Ranked Battles, the number of battles with Tier X vehicles in Random Battles dropped by 15-20%. Tier 8 was a much better experience in Random Battles during this time.

Our goal: Firstly to give people the chance to compete against equal players, and the second, in my opinions, was to give something special for that.

The command portion of the game is poorly executed, though in Ranked Battles this is slightly better. In the second beta season we complicated reaching the 5th rank and we assumed that 45% who played wouldn’t reach it. They’d hang around ranks 3 or 4. As well, the number of people with less than 1000 battles and very low statistics should be greatly reduced- These are our expectations, so we’ll see what the next beta season brings.

Initially we had planned on giving 3 chevrons to the losing team, but this lead to players hugging the red line and waiting til the last minute to get into the fight. With that, people received their reward that the expense of the rest of the team. We won’t completely write off the chevron, we understand the individual results should be appreciated. Though nothing is finalized, so we’ll see how future developments go with players.

(Regarding certain battles that featured Rank 5,4,3, and 0 players in one battle) This was a safety net of sorts for the matchmaker. This way we wouldn’t have Rank 5 players waiting for a long time to get into a game, and was supposed to be a rare exception. We have since reworked it, and with the SPG changes it should be minimal in the second season. We’ll closely monitor the statistics.

We’ll reconsider prime time. Late night players should have things a little easier.

The announcement for the second season (for certain regions) should be in early September.

The second Beta season will consist of 3 stages over 3 weeks.

In this Beta, Personal Missions will not be counted towards.

In the general test, we introduced the possibility of gaining Marks of Excellence, however players said that this complicates obtaining marks, and affects the number of battles played in Random. We’re reflecting on the topic.

After the second beta season, we plan on launching an official season reflecting the new changes.

They could reward a chevron to players in the losing team with a medal/commendation, just like the experience multiplier. That way, the player will have to achieve at least something to get one.

whouldnt the ranked batles be more competitive at lower tiers then just having the same bunch of… unicons….

wait i know why there doing this, so they can reward those same unicom players whit fucking overpowered tanks like they have been doing so far on clan wars live tournements….

Having strictly tier 8 only special ranked battles would allow more players to be involved, both premium and non-premium tanks, giving tier 8 tanks a chance to actually play top tier. I think Wargaming would get more participation this way, and make purchasing tier 8 premium tanks more attractive.

Yep but with recent (too) powerful premiums this wouldn’t be fair either. No prems in special game modes is what I say. Tier 10 or tier 8, premiums should not be allowed

I have well over 60k battles, almost every tier 10 going, and an above average WN8 and efficiency rating. But I won’t be playing Ranked Battles until WG do something about gold ammo.

Skill is not rewarded in Ranked Battles; spamming gold is, and that removes the fun factor. It’s no fun, so why should I spend my leisure time doing it?

WG seems to have missed the point that in the end, ranked scoring is no more individualistic nor skill-based than the randoms. They’re still stuck on the contradiction of trying to determine skill while also trying to promote team-play. There’s no way to stop halfway on this one, either fully embrace the individual’s performance or go fully collectivist for the team instead.

And believe it or not, there is a way to make a fully individualistic meritocracy end up being a respectable mode. And that’s to do the scoring without taking win/loss into account at all. If there’s no fear of losing (and suitable rewards for spotting your own targets) then this redline sniping will disappear instantly.

WG assume that us players, we all like there instant brawling in whatever ‘new name’ they give it – we don’t

Only unicum or near unicum players, this mostly now are 13 yr to 19 year olds do really well with peek-a-boo with there twitchy micro-second reflex’s its there thing instant drug action all time, non stop, lose win not care.

    – hence the insane Gold ammo spam, they just give a fuck, so long as they get more kills all that matters.

    – adults those above 25 anyway, don’t want ‘intense 4 minute gameplay’ every battle after a day at work,

‘fun’ in a Game is more important – ranked T10 battles this after a 8 or 10 hour day at work, no thanks fuck that meme WG

  7. The only thing it promotes are the good old supporting unicums. They take their T10 meds, press 2 and gl hf.

I found myself in my T62A and Grille constantly having to switch to heat to stay competitive because the whole damage log was yellow. I can afford it, but what is the point of half of the game mechanics then?

Unicorns will get their Improved Rammers, Optics, GLD, 7,5% vents, and the gap between normal players and them will widen even more. I wouldn’t be against it if it was just for ranked, but it’ll plague randoms aswell. It’ll become the win chance indicator.
    15:0, 15:1 battles…

Hell… I’d rather they gave gold or an existing premium tank as a reward. Would keep some of them tryhards at clan wars and team battles where they belong. I want to “chill and do skill with a twist”, not “will pressing 2 give you kill, soviet bolshevist?”

    And after that…

Scoring is supposed to be individual? Then why is the score based on losing/winning teams? It contradicts the friggin purpose of the mode in the first place!

At the end of battle, list players by individual score (including badges, medals and such) without taking any win/lose bonuses into account. Of all 30, top 10 get a chevron, 10 don’t get anything and the bottom 10 lose a chevron. No win/lose bull*hit and it’ll be as individual as one can get out of this mode!

Tier 8 battles were a much better experience???? Are you fucking kidding me?? Or are you on some heavy experimental drugs? Yes tier 8 is an awsome experience. How would you describe 20 games bottom tier in a row? They are not only not fixing anything, they insult our intelligence as well…..This game is a sinking ship. As always if you disagree don’t just thumb down, leave tour comment below so there is discussion.

I suggested tier 8’s only battles, so you are NOT bottom tiering and opens it up to more players…. thats all.

well, the idea of removing prem-ammo for RBs sounds very interesting. first of all, it would promote a more mobile gameplay, as there are quite a number of tanks that cannot be penned by standard ammo of meds frontally. but flanking them surely helps. second: the japanes superheavies would be forced to shoot non-prm-HE, which limits there damage output greatly. and tanks like Maus would have to aim carefully with their AP-pen being only soso. yet they could still pen another Maus’ turret frontally, but only at the weakspot/weak bar directly on the middle.

yes, thinking about this makes the idea look better and better. they should at least give it a try – it’s a beta for RBs anyway.

“Removing prem-ammo” sounds interesting. We should try that instead.
One of the reasons I like the sandbox is that WG disables premium rounds, for whatever reason, and it makes the game so much more interesting and imo more fun.

They put so sophisticated logic behind their decisions that they forget to just look at everything in the most basic way, after they make changes.
Redline camping prevention by removing chevrons? Good, they try to prevent it.
How they do it? By making this mode just like regular random during most events, just wait for MM to give you winning team and get promoted after scoring one hit with your derp or one clip with your autoloader. Where is the difference? Where is the skill?

I told them, TOP 7 / TOP 3 get promoted. TOP 10 / TOP 5 get status quo. The rest lose chevron.

Yes thats true if you get a winning team you will get your chevron. You know what else is true? If you’re a better player you will get a better team more often because you’re on it. Gaining chevrons when you lose is an awful idea because it just focuses players on trying to get those top 3 spots on the losing team rather than trying to win. If you play well you wont lose chevrons and if you play really well you’ll gain them. This means on average good players will improve in rank and worse players won’t.
