Making of WoT’s HD Graphics

Good day everyone,

Brief post here, but for those interested here is an article going over the process of creating World of Tanks HD maps and tank. Covering everything from lighting to water effects:

The amazing team of artists from Wargaming discussed all the updates to GI, particle systems, materials, water shaders and other elements of the astonishing World of Tanks engine.

“Wargaming has recently released 12 HD maps for World Of Tanks PC on a Sandbox server. Those players who managed to take a glimpse into it were truly amazed by the new improved graphics. The community reviews went viral shortly and though the server is off now, the dates of new playtests will be announced soon.

Everything the players saw was a result of hard work and collaboration of all art and tech departments. Today we’ll go backstage and talk about new lighting and shading, terrain, particles, post-processing and all the other stunning work they did to push the game to a new level.”

    • Do you have any idea how much work is it to rewrtite a game engine, create high resolution textures and high quality models? Because I do, and it takes shitload of time and effort. After seeing what they achieved, I am not surprised they are so proud of it…

      Well, since their live servers are complete garbage nowadays (at least on EU – broken chat, broken friend list, terribad MM, server hiccups here and there, “scheduled maintenance” in prime time, etc.) they simply *have to* try hard somewhere else… And since marketing department had couple years long coffee break this job fall on their heads…

    • Nothing to convince. I played it. The improvements looks great, good on them. Can’t wait for it to come live.

    great new level of design… i could play the maps on super test and there is 1. such big difference in game feeling, like it would be a new game, so its very REFRESHING and 2. i didnt recognize any big difference in FPS (it5 4460, 960 4 GB, 16 DDR).

    So all in all it’s a good job they are doing there… would like to know when this is going LIVE…

    Next very important changes:
    – change the physics a bit so you dont go turtle with the fast tanks
    – GET RID of XVM ingame (make it possible to turn stats into private)

    and this game could be actually really AMAZING!

    CAN THEY PLEASE SCALE THE MAPS TO THE TANKS????
    look at the preview videos, once again the buildings and features overall are much too big when compared to the tanks… The house doors are higher than a tank…. FFS this is not micromachines tank edition!
