New Customization Mechanics Guide

A guide to the new customization in patch 9.21 from WoT EU.

We’ve gone deeper into the customization system lately, providing you with a wider range of options to express yourself on the battlefield. Most importantly, we redesigned the way customization works, adding styles and mapping out a set of customizable areas on a tank. Now, you can paint the hull, turret, gun, suspension, and gun mantlet separately, adjust camo sizes, and give your vehicle a distinct look with visual effects.

To make your vehicle a truly individual and unique battle machine, you can customize its exterior. Update 9.21 introduces the new customization mechanics. To customize the whole vehicle or just some parts, use one of the customization methods:

  • Preset styles are a pre-made set of customization elements for all seasons. You can customize your vehicle in just one click.
  • Custom styles are a collection of different elements, which you can apply on your vehicle in various combinations. Choosing and combining elements on your own allows you to create a unique vehicle design for each season.

Preset styles

Preset styles are a pre-made set of customization elements for all seasons. Each preset style can include paints, camouflage, inscriptions, emblems and visual effects. You can rent a style for a number of battles using credits. High-tier vehicles also have permanent preset styles, available for gold.

Apart from the balanced design for all seasons, preset styles with camouflage on the hull also provide a concealment bonus. Preset styles are applied on the whole vehicle and cannot be edited.

Custom style

Custom styles are a range of customization elements that you can apply on your vehicle in various combinations.

03_custom_style_en

There are five elements of exterior customization—paints, camouflage, emblems, inscriptions and effects.

Paints

Every nation has a range of paints available for vehicle decoration. Paints can be applied on five vehicle parts—the hull, turret, suspension, gun and gun mantlet. It takes one paint bucket to paint one part. So, you need a maximum of five buckets to paint the whole vehicle for a season.

Camouflages

This exterior customization is functional and can enhance your vehicle’s concealment. You can apply three seasonal camouflages that change automatically depending on the map you are playing on.

Camouflage can be applied separately on the hull, turret and gun. This allows you to combine camouflages. Apart from different combinations, you can also edit the scale and, in some cases, the color palette for each camouflaged vehicle part.

To get a concealment bonus, you have to apply camouflage on the hull. If you camouflage only the turret and the gun, your vehicle’s visibility is not affected.

Emblems

Vehicles can be decorated with emblems instead of standard flags and signs, like red Soviet stars or German crosses. Depending on the vehicle model, you can apply one or two emblems on it.

Inscriptions

Another decorative element. Depending on the vehicle model, you can apply one or two inscriptions on it.

Effects

With effects, you can give your vehicle a battle-hardened look or make it shine like a brand new combat machine, fresh from the garage. Effects allow you to add wear or gloss to the paints and camouflages applied on your vehicle.

All exterior customizations are layered on each other in the same order as they are presented in the customization panel. For example, if you apply camouflage after painting your vehicle, the camouflage will cover the paint.

To apply a custom style element on your vehicle:

  1. In your Garage, click Exterior. In the lower part of the screen, the exterior customization panel is displayed.
  2. Go to the CUSTOM STYLES tab on the customization panel.
  3. On the left part of the screen, select a season for which you want to customize your vehicle.

  6. To purchase the applied customization, click Purchase in the upper-right corner of the customization panel. Click Purchase and exit in the Confirm Changes window.

If you change your mind and decide not to buy a customization element, clear the corresponding checkbox in the Confirm Changes window.

You can also easily apply one selected element on all vehicle parts quickly:

  1. Click on the customization element. The element’s icon is displayed to the right of the cursor .
  2. One by one, click all the vehicle parts you want to customize with this element.
  3. To purchase the applied customization, click Purchase in the upper-right corner of the customization panel. Click Purchase and exit in the Confirm Changes window.

Customization elements can be purchased in advance, without applying them on the vehicle:

  1. Right-click the element and select Add to cart.
  2. In the Purchase Confirmation window, set the necessary number of elements and click Purchase.

Historical accuracy

All customization elements in the game can be historical or non-historical, the latter are marked with a icon. How does it affect the game?

Non-historical                                                                                       Historical

After you turn on the display of non-historical exteriors, you will see all customization styles on the battlefield.

Be aware of these settings when creating a custom style. If there is even one non-historical element in your vehicle customization, the whole exterior is considered non-historical and will not be displayed for other players with default settings.

Pay attention to the customization status under the vehicle icon in the upper part of the screen. If you apply a non-historical element, the status glows yellow and a special icon  is displayed. Click the   button on the status line to see the list of all the non-historical elements applied, and delete them, if needed.

Paints, camouflage palettes and effects are currently available only for Tier X and Premium Tier VIII vehicles.

They could save themselves a lot of trouble by NOT splitting up the tank into different paint-able areas. Just have each of the schemes apply to the whole tank and give us more colors and patterns to choose from.

annnnnnnnnd nope, just switch that crap of in the options so you don’t see what people think is funny. just another sad attempt at making money, when they could just reduce the cost of premium vehicles, and they would sell way more which will make more money than selling a few at a high price. Wargaming has got so desperate to make money to pay for their new offices, that they are driving people away from the game, maybe if they spent as much time fixing the game issues as they do thinking of sh*t money making schemes, then they would have a bigger playerbase, with more people paying for premium days.

Ah cool you don’t like the paint you can turn off, better sell Defenders for less and make the game better, right? Right?

Ive tried it in the CT with respective country camo and later on with historical camo. those are really good. But the amount of ppl painting tanks in blue, pink and a mix of said colours, plus others, were just hilarious (I left the option to show all camos, on).

But as I said earlier, this will be World of Clowns. Ofc, if we turn off the option to see the clowns, things will become more enjoyable.

What the critics fail to see is WG are a company that wants to make money. Criticize the paint all you like but you can turn off the silly stuff if so pleases you and they make money without harming your delicate sensibilities. Its better than the next Defender coming out.

  5. Robopon says:

Just imagine having cool historical camo schemes sold/earned on special events, something more interesting for non-historical paints maybe too. Possible new way of WoT monetization instead of OP premiums and gold ammo sales. People just need to be more accepting and open minded. Maybe someday because of this we’ll have total ammo system revamp and working tier 8 MM. One can hope.

  6. Anonymous says:

It’s a revenue stream with zero impact on gameplay that doesn’t have to affect anyone. I’ll take this over OP premiums, overpriced bundles and all other P2W ways of generating income any day of the week.

  7. heldermartins1 says:

@Robopon: “… total ammo system revamp…” As in “no premium ammo for all lickers and affiliated” spamming bobs?

    1. Robopon says:

I like to imagine something akin to WT ammo system aka if you can’t pen with AP you’ll load heat/apcr/apds/whatever but without a need to pay more credits. All ammo will be standard. Maybe they can make that you’ll need xp to unlock new ammo types for a specific tank, again, like in WT. That’d be neat.

In my opinion, colors should be free as it has no effect. Only the camos and emblems should remain payable. Personally emblems should be free as well, only camos is worth anything

  9. Anonymous says:

Painting your tank brightly will have a real effect. It will make you easier to hit. Not as in WOT camo mechanics, but as in real life camo mecahnics. Bright things are easier to focus on and grab attention better.

Do I understand correctly that we now have to rebuy our inscriptions and camos every time an esports season restarts? I put a lot of gold into my Tier X’s camo and if I have to repurchase it all, forget it.
