Many people think that a leap year happens every four years, but that’s not actually true. Did you know that 1900 was not a leap year, for example? It takes three easy calculations to determine if you are in a leap year:

1. Choose a year that you want to check and divide that number by 4 (e.g. 2020 ÷ 4). If you get a whole number as a result (in this case 505), it is most likely a leap year—go to step 2. If you see fractions or decimals, there’s definitely only going to be 365 days in the year.
2. Calculate if the year is evenly divisible by 100. If you get a result with fractions or decimals (2020 ÷ 100 = 20.2), congratulations—it’s a leap year! Otherwise, proceed to step 3, because you still can’t be sure!
3. Check if the year can be evenly divided by 400. If that’s the case, it is a leap year as well. The year 2000 was such a case.
